Correlation Between Problem Set Performance and Quiz I Grade, 1996

Correlation Scatter-Gram: Quiz I grade vs Current Problem Set Average

The graph indicates that students with a given problem set average PS were not likely to score above the yellow line, 30+0.6*PS, (usually about 10 points above the PS average). That many students performed less well on the quiz than would be expected from their problem set averages is an indication that there is too much collaboration going on for the problem sets. To ensure better quiz performance, students really should work out the details of problems on their own, sharing only general concepts, hints and tricks, not so many details of their work.
