Detailed analysis of scattering/Introduction to Differential Scattering Cross Section

In this problem you will explore the detailed analysis of scattering using the simple model of point particles scattering from hard spherical shaped reflectors.

Hint: You may wish to refer to Eisberg and Resnick, Quantum Physics of Atoms, Molecules, Nuclei, and Particles (Wiley) which has a detailed discussion of Rutherford scattering. Also, the solution to last year's problem is on the web:

Consider the single collision event in Figure 3 (the x-axis runs parallel to the incoming trajectory and directly through the center of the reflector). Note that the total angle subtended by the spherical part of the reflector is only .
