Degrees of freedom --

From the example of the particle in a box, we learned that the the basic quantity which specifies the state of the system at any instant in time and from which all other quantities can be determined is the wave function $\Psi(x)$. The appropriate choice for the degrees of freedom is thus $\Psi(x)$.
