Conservation of momentum tex2html_wrap_inline731 (Eq. ) -

The difference (per unit length) of the force acting on the two sides of a small chunk gives the time rate of change of the momentum per unit length of the chunk. This expresses conservation of momentum because it states that the net flow of momentum into the chunk gives the change of momentum in the chunk. This is a third way of looking at the segment response equation of the previous paragraph.
